WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: early

Weather conditions:

Yearly average air temperature was 1.0øC above the long-term average, and precipitation was 178% of the average. Mean monthly temperatures exceeded the average in all months with the exception of February, June and November (1.0øC, 0.3øC and 1.2øC below average, respectively). The snow layer was simlar to the long-term average on 9.03. Air temperatures dropped to -2øC from 31.05-9.06 when snowfalls and rains occurred. Snow cover reduced to 50% on 17.05 in the forest and on 28.05 in the mountains. Snow melted completely from level areas on 24.05, and ice floated down larger rivers on 20.05. The water table was low in lakes in spring, and streams were shallow during summer.
Air temperatures exceeded the mean long-term monthly averages by 2.1øC in April, 1.1øC in May, 3.7øC in July and 0.8øC in August, and were 0.3øC below average in June. Precipitation was 100% of the monthly average in April, 110% in May, 120% in June, 110% in July, 121% in August, 192% in September and 692% in October. Snow had blanketed the ground on 10.10. Autumn and winter 2004/2005 were warm.

Season temperature: warm
Season humidity: dry
Date of 50% snow-cover: 17.05
Date of ice-break on rivers: 20.05
Date of final loss of snow: 24.05

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

high

Breeding conditions:

Among birds of prey Osprey, Northern Goshawk and Merlin probably bred, while Rough-legged Buzzards and owls were rare with no indications of breeding.
Grouse density determined in the course of the August counts was 83 birds/10 km2 which is the record low value found during 1998-2004. Abundance of waterfowl per unit length of lake and river shoreline was the lowest during 1995-2004. Waders bred in usual numbers, including European Golden Plover, Dotterel and Whimbrel in mountain tundra.
Numbers of Arctic Hare, Red Fox, Marten, Ermine and Weasel remained high. The yield of Bilberry, Clusterberry, Bog bilberry, Crowberry and spruce seeds was good, but the crop of pine seeds was low.

Rodent dynamics:

The abundance of Clethrionomys sp. voles halved by autumn 2004, compared with the previous year, and reached 18.8 animals per 100 trap-nights in the Grey-sided Vole. Population cycle of the latter dominant species was protracted for a year, as relatively high numbers were recorded during 3 years in a row, compared with usual 2 years. Abundance of Microtus sp. voles and shrews was low in summer 2004.
